Why You Shouldn’t Send AI Artwork Straight to Your Print Vendor

AI has made it easier than ever to create an eye-catching piece of artwork in seconds. Need a retro illustration for a T-shirt? A futuristic graphic for an event? A cool pattern for a promotional product? A few prompts can get you surprisingly far.


But there’s an important distinction between artwork that looks good on your screen and artwork that’s ready to be printed.


When it comes to promotional products, apparel, signage, packaging, and other printed materials, AI-generated artwork often needs some serious cleanup before it can go into production. And while AI can be a great tool for brainstorming concepts and visual direction, sending that first AI-generated image directly to your print vendor can create more problems than it solves.


Here’s why...


1. AI Artwork Usually Isn’t Vector Artwork

One of the biggest issues with AI-generated artwork is that it’s typically created as a raster image, such as a JPG or PNG. That’s fine for viewing an image on a screen, but many types of print production work best with vector artwork.


Vector files, such as AI, EPS, or SVG files, are made up of paths rather than pixels. That means they can be resized from a small sticker to a giant banner without becoming blurry or pixelated. Raster artwork, on the other hand, has a fixed number of pixels. Enlarge it too much and you can end up with fuzzy edges, blurry details, or a low-resolution final product. This is especially important for logos, line art, text, and designs that need to be printed across different product sizes.


The takeaway: An AI-generated PNG might look perfect on your computer, but that doesn't mean it's a scalable, production-ready vector file.



2. AI Artwork Isn’t Automatically Print-Ready

“Looks good” and “ready for production” are two very different things.

Print-ready artwork needs to meet specific technical requirements depending on what you're producing. That can include:


  • Correct file format

  • Appropriate resolution

  • Proper dimensions and proportions

  • Bleeds and safe areas when needed

  • Correct color mode

  • Outlined or properly embedded fonts

  • Clean paths and artwork

  • Correct spot colors for certain printing processes

  • Proper separation of design elements


AI image generators aren't thinking about any of that when they create an image.

They're focused on making the image look good, not making sure it can successfully move through a commercial printing process. That means an AI-generated design may need to be rebuilt or modified before it can be sent to production.



3. Screen Printing and AI Artwork Don't Always Mix

Screen printing is one area where AI-generated artwork can cause particular headaches.

AI generators love gradients, shadows, highlights, textures, subtle color variations, and photorealistic effects. And while those can look awesome digitally, they aren't always ideal for screen printing.


Screen printing often works best with clean, solid-color artwork that can be separated into individual ink colors. For example, an AI generator might create what looks like a simple blue graphic. But when you look closer, that “blue” could actually contain dozens of subtle shades, gradients, transparency effects, and blended colors. That doesn't necessarily translate cleanly into screen-printing.


Our designers may need to simplify the artwork, recreate elements, eliminate unnecessary shading, and determine how the design should be separated for production. So if you're creating custom apparel, AI art for screen printing should be treated as a starting point, not necessarily the finished file.




4. RGB and CMYK Don't See Color the Same Way

Here's another big one: the color you see on your screen may not be the color you get in print. Digital screens use RGB, which stands for red, green, and blue. Printing generally uses CMYK, which stands for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. RGB can display incredibly bright, saturated colors that simply can't be reproduced with standard CMYK printing.


AI-generated artwork is typically created for a digital environment, so you might see a super-bright electric blue, neon green, or vibrant purple on your monitor and assume that's exactly what will show up on your finished product. And unfortunately, it doesn't work that way.


When that artwork is converted for print, those colors may shift significantly. A color that looked bright and vibrant digitally could come out duller or simply look different once printed. That's why RGB vs. CMYK for printing is an important consideration when preparing artwork for a print vendor.


Our designers can adjust colors and prepare the artwork specifically for the intended production process, helping ensure the final product is much closer to what you had in mind.




5. AI Doesn't Know Your Brand Guidelines

AI knows what you tell it. It doesn't know your brand the way your designer does.

You might prompt an AI tool to create something using your company's brand colors, logo, or fonts, but that doesn't mean it will use them accurately.


A logo might be slightly distorted.

A brand color might be close, but not exact.

A font might look similar, but not actually be your approved typeface.


Even small inconsistencies can make a piece of branded merchandise feel “off.”

And when you're putting your company's logo on hundreds or thousands of promotional products, close enough isn't really close enough.


A designer understands the nuances of your brand guidelines and knows how your logo, typography, colors, spacing, and other visual elements should be used. AI can help generate an idea. A designer makes sure that idea actually looks like your brand.




6. AI Can Create Some Very Weird Little Details (iykyk)

Let's be honest. Sometimes AI artwork just gets weird.


Extra fingers. Strange lettering. Misspelled words. Mysterious objects. Logos that are almost right but definitely not right. Tiny details that make absolutely no sense when you zoom in.

Those quirks might go unnoticed when you're quickly looking at an image on your screen.

They become a much bigger problem when that image is printed 12 inches wide on the front of a T-shirt 😅


Before artwork goes into production, it needs to be carefully reviewed for these kinds of issues. A human designer can spot and correct details that an AI image generator doesn't know are mistakes.




7. AI-Generated Text Is Especially Problematic

AI has gotten much better at generating text, but it's still not something you want to blindly trust on a printed product.


If your design includes:

“MARKETING CONFERENCE 2026”

you don't want to discover after production that the AI decided it should say something like:

“MRAKETING CONFERNCE 2026.”


AI-generated typography can also have inconsistent letter spacing, distorted characters, strange fonts, and other issues that might not be obvious at first glance.


Rule of thumb: When text is an important part of your design, it's almost always better to have a designer create it using the correct font and formatting.


8. “Can You Just Print This?” Can Turn Into a Much Bigger Project

This is probably the biggest reason we encourage clients to think of AI artwork as a creative starting point, rather than a final production file.


If you send your print vendor a finished AI image, you may expect it to simply be dropped into production.


Instead, what typically happens is that the artwork may need to be:

  • Recreated as vector artwork

  • Redrawn or traced

  • Simplified for screen printing

  • Converted from RGB to CMYK

  • Separated into spot colors

  • Resized or reformatted

  • Corrected for brand colors

  • Rebuilt with the correct fonts

  • Cleaned up for production

  • Adjusted for the specific product or printing method


At that point, your “finished artwork” isn't necessarily finished anymore.

Our designers often end up recreating or rebuilding AI-generated artwork so it's both on brand and actually usable for the chosen printing process, which can add extra time to the artwork and production process.



So, Should You Stop Using AI to Create Artwork?

Not necessarily! We actually think AI can be an incredibly useful creative tool. Use it to explore ideas, create mood boards, develop visual concepts, experiment with styles, show your team what you're imagining, give your designer a jumping-off point. Just don't assume that the image AI gives you is automatically a print-ready file.


Think of AI artwork as the concept, not necessarily the production file.
